    Radar level sensors are typically installed in a single assembly, combining the transmitter and receiver antennas in one device.

    The two main types of radar level sensors used are the Air-to-Air Radar (TAR) and the Guided Wave Radar (GWR).

    Aerial radar level sensors are the most commonly used type because they are non-contact and easier to install. The transmitted magnetic waves fan out from the sensor until they strike the liquid surface and are reflected back. The main disadvantage of the TAR level sensor is that the electromagnetic pulse energy is attenuated by the longer distance and lower dielectric process medium. Since there is no contact with the fluid being measured, the TAR level measurement technology can be used in aggressive chemical applications.

    Guided wave radar types include a waveguide mounted in front of the sensor to focus microwave pulses and enhance reflected wave energy. This makes it possible to use GWR-type sensors with lower dielectric process media that would otherwise degrade TAR-type sensors.

    Radar level sensors are installed above the liquid level on the top of the tank, or on a platform that spans the top of an open tank.


    How does radar level measurement work?

    The device works according to the FMCW method (FMCW = Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave). Electromagnetic pulses in the GHz range are sent to the medium at varying frequencies between 77 and 81 GHz. Since the transmitter constantly changes the frequency of the transmitted signal, there is a frequency difference between the transmitted signal and the reflected signal. Subtract the frequency of the reflected signal from the frequency of the signal transmitted at that time, resulting in a low frequency signal proportional to the distance from the horizontal. This signal is further processed for fast, reliable and highly accurate level measurement
